For the first time in the history of our library outreach program, a male dancer presented at "A Book and a Ballerina."

Seventy-two people at Kensington-Normal Heights Branch Library gaped on Saturday as Antonio Zamora of City Ballet of San Diego performed during my read aloud of "Boys Dance!" by John Robert Allman. He also talked about the vital roles male dancers play during ballet performances, going as far as to demonstrate a lift with yours truly!
Zamora's ballet journey began at age 11. When asked what he loves about ballet, he shared he enjoys the opportunity to act in nonconformist ways which normally wouldn't be allowed in society, giving the example of performing on stage as different characters, from wolves to mice kings and naughty brothers.
Children and caregivers alike asked questions and practiced ballet steps. For many, it was the first brush with ballet. Adults learned the five positions of ballet with glee and were happy to hear that people ages 4-99+ can take dance classes at City Ballet's studio in Pacific Beach.
At the end of the program, Librarian on the Go asked the audience a simple question:
"Is ballet just for some people?"
"No," the audience cried in unison.
Ms. Katia added, "Ballet is for..."
"Everyone!" they belted with broad smiles.
Please look out for Zamora at future "A Book and A Ballerina" programs.
